Grades 3 - 5, Mrs. Looney (annie.looney@greatheartswesternhills.org)

3rd Grade: This week we traveled to South America. Peru, where some of the pre-Incan civilization Geoglyphs can be found. We studied and discussed Geoglyphs and practiced drawing these designs with the continuous line method. Next week our Spartan Artists will be recreating a Geoglyphs using sand/paint/glue and etching tool.

4th Grade: The Spartans have been architects, learning all about the features of the Notre Dame Cathedral: Rose Windows, Lancet Windows, and Gargoyles. We are building our vocabulary learning Organic Shape/Geometric Shape and how to identify each in Medieval Architecture. Next week, our craftsmen are going to make a rose window using oil pastels and a stencil.

5th Grade: Reepicheep, Baggins, Pevensies, and Oakenshield have been observing Mola Art: a textile produced by the indigenous Guna tribe of Panama. We have observed different animals portrayed in the textiles and discussed their importance and symbolism in many ancient cultures. We then sketched the animal designs and learn how the "Line" element of art can be used when designing a Mola. Next week, students will begin a handmade Mola, using paper and yarn, with the animal of their choice as the centerpiece.
